Along with many other effects that are still being explored, being infected with COVID-19 could make you more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction, according to this (preliminary) study by Sansone et al. Research points to three factors that can lead to the possible occurrence of erectile dysfunction in men who have had the virus .
Three factors
- Vascular Effects : Erectile function is a predictor of heart disease, so we know that the vascular system and the reproductive system are connected. We also know that COVID-19 can cause hyperinflammation throughout the body, especially in the heart and surrounding muscles. The blood supply to the penis can be blocked or narrowed as a result of a new or aggravated vascular condition caused by the virus.
- Psychological impact : sexual activity is closely related to mental health. Stress, anxiety, and depression caused by the virus and the pandemic can be related to sexual dysfunction and bad moods.
- General deterioration in health : Erectile dysfunction is usually a symptom of an underlying problem. Men in poor health are at higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction and also having a severe reaction to COVID-19. Since the virus can cause a host of health problems, general poor health is a cause for concern for both erectile dysfunction and other complications.

Another cause for concern regarding the research is the possible testicular damage that can occur after a COVID-19 infection . It is too early to know if the damage is permanent, temporary, or if it may affect fertility. Age is also an important aspect to consider, as it is a risk factor for developing both erectile dysfunction and a severe case of COVID-19.
