For the first in 159 years of existence, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has elected a black woman as president of its Undergraduate Association (UA).
Danielle Geathers got the job after organizing a successful online campaign on social media.

Geathers, who specializes in mechanical engineering and studies of the African and American diaspora, launched herself on the adventure of preparing as a candidate when she assumed that people who care about fairness never want to run for the title role because they think they don’t deserve it.
His victory is important to MIT, where only 6% of the students are African American and 47% are women . For his part, Geathers hopes his victory will help other minorities see a place for themselves at MIT. As Gathers explains in an interview : "At the very least, this will make MIT a more welcoming and inclusive place."
Now, in September, Geathers will get to work implementing their proposals . This includes getting institutional support for equality policies , establishing a diversity council to unite different minority groups on campus, and revitalizing student spaces. Geathers is already on all of this through Zoom online calls, which include discussions about what class will be like in the fall.
