Stephen Hawking wants to map the entire known universe

Sponsored by the famous Stephen Hawking , the COSMOS supercomputing center at the University of Cambridge has announced the purpose of creating the most detailed 3D map of the universe since the Big Bang.

COSMOS is currently thelargest shared memory devicein Europe , boasting 1,856 Intel Xeon E5 processor cores, 31 Intel MIC Many Integrated Core co-processors, and 14.5 terabytes of shared memory globally.

This mission will measure the shapes and redshifts of galaxies (looking 10 million years in the past), helping scientists understand how dark matter and dark energy together influence.

The 3D map will be based on data obtained from two previous surveys : ESA’s Planck satellite and the Dark Energy Survey.
