In order to measure the exact altitude of the mountain above sea level, an eight-member Chinese research team has reached the top of Mount Everest to erect an inspection marker on the summit and install a GNSS (Global Positioning by satelite).

Complex calculations are needed to eliminate errors caused by factors such as temperature, air pressure, and the refractive environment.

After data analysis and processing, they will carry out desk studies and repeated checks to determine the exact height, a job that will take two to three months .

China has made six large measurements on the mountain since the establishment of the People’s Republic in 1949. The height recorded in 1975 was 8,848.13 meters while in 2005 it reached 8,844.43 meters .

If you ask us what is the highest mountain on Earth, it will all depend on where we start to measure . If we are asked which is the farthest from the center of the Earth, then we must begin to forget such familiar names as Everest or even Mauna Kea . Because that title is held by Mount Chimborazo, in Ecuador, which exceeds both measured from the core of the Earth.
