On September 24, 2018, Chen Haiyi (China) drove a NIO ES8 electric off-road car to an altitude of 5,715 meters on the way to the Purog Kangri glacier in Tibet, China.

This record attempt was organized to demonstrate the reliability of the ES8 in extreme conditions. On its journey to the third largest glacier in the world, the vehicle had to endure freezing temperatures .


The NIO ES8 is an electric car of the Light Off-Road Vehicle (SUV) type manufactured by NIO. It was marketed for the Chinese market in June 2018.

It has a 70 kWh lithium-ion battery that gives it a NEDC range of 355 km. Total power is 480 kW (653 hp). The maximum torque is 840 Nm. Accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.4 seconds. The maximum speed is 180 km / h.

It hasa liquid-cooled 70 kWhlithium-ion battery pack. It is made up of square batteries with a life of 2000 recharge cycles. It can be exchanged for another in 3 minutes.


This was the first time that an electric car reached Purog Kangri, a 422 km2 glacier considered the third largest in the world. The record for driving at the highest altitude in a car is 6,688 meters , reached by Chileans Gonzalo Bravo and Eduardo Canales in 2007. However, they used a modified Suzuki Samurai (due to their ascent to the Ojos Del Salado volcano in Atacama, Chile ).
